Old New England: the classic Barn, livestock grazing in a rolling field and the Farmhouse seen in the distance; still standing after all these years. This nostalgic scene runs deep and reminds us of a simpler life, one of sustainability, pride and perseverance; a harmonious dance between man and earth. Yet, despite its romantic appeal, this idyllic farm life was troubled with numerous challenges, from backbreaking work to enduring hardships. Sadly, as time progresses, these once-thriving farms are dwindling, giving way to modern replacements that lack the character of the past. Old Barns and Farmhouses are torn down to make room for new and the large open fields surrounding them that grew crops or hay become lawns. The animals that once roamed the fields that called out loudly are now replaced with quiet memories. So, when I receive an opportunity to visit old farms that remain or am blessed to get up close and personal with the animals that still reside, I document them on film and transform them into encaustic work. Through the art of encaustic, these fleeting moments of farm life are immortalized, allowing us to cherish and reflect upon their timeless beauty.
