INSPIRATION
What inspires any of us really? Maybe it is the way the light hits a surface, or possibly a memory it brings when viewing a scene; a touch of emotion with the surroundings that makes one document the moment. For me, it is how the environment and those that live within create a symbiotic relationship. An intimate connection, the energy that is shared between them that catches my attention and I am able to capture it on film. It is through this and the encaustic process that I attempt to unveil my interpretation of that inspiration.
my process
My encaustic process begins with a well-defined concept in mind. Initially, I capture photos, meticulously refine them through editing, and then proceed to print them. Integrating these images either within the wax or onto the surface, I create a series of trials with wax and diverse materials to achieve the desired effect. Gradually layering and experimenting with different techniques, I weave in elements like shellac, alcohol inks, pan pastels, and pigment sticks, enriching the intricacy and depth of my artwork.
about me
I obtained my Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Architectural Design from the University of Massachusetts in Amherst. Throughout my academic journey at UMass, I delved into numerous photography courses, expanding my knowledge of various photographic techniques. Post-graduation, I ventured into diverse technical roles, immersing myself in Lighting Design and Interior Design. These professional undertakings significantly contributed to refining my understanding of color theory, lighting principles, and artistic composition.
My interest in encaustic art began by admiring artists who used this medium and seeing how it enhanced images intrigued me. I also have a connection to beeswax from beekeeping and value bees for their role in nature. This made working with encaustic a natural fit for me.
I love how this medium pushes my level of creativity and how working with encaustic feels so alive and fluid.
I currently live in Nottingham, NH with my husband, two grown children and my beloved dogs, Pandora and Tucker.
When I am not working in the studio, I can be found hanging with my Fam, running, walking Tucker or camping in my retro canned ham Shasta travel trailer.
